Desktop Tower Defense: Blast them creeps!
Posted by: Tasos Alvas in Reviews, tags: Games, ReviewsDesktop Tower Defense is a flash-based game, inspired by some multiplayer maps in WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos and Starcraft featuring a unique style of play, Tower (or Turret) Defense.

The objective of the game is to stop advancing waves of creeps from reaching the other side of the level. In order to achieve this, you get to build six different kinds of towers, forming a maze the creeps have to go through.
Although you aren’t likely to be amazed by the game’s minimal graphics, Desktop Tower Defense has proven over the course of the last two months to be, in its simplicity, one of the most addictive (As yahoo’s Jeremy Zawodny first expressed) games that you can find. The site’s news section for the 5th of March, 2007 reported that the game had gotten 30000 visitors and served 9GB of bandwidth in one day, directed there from Digg and Stumbleupon.Simplicity may be the characteristic that makes people like this game at first, but what makes people stay is the well-balanced progression of the game’s levels and the depth of strategic planning that can be utilized.
Although beating the game on normal mode is not that difficult, and can probably be done in two or three well-thought tries, getting into the high score tables is a task that requires much more time and dedication. This is partly because of the huge user base of the game, but mainly because the scores can vary a lot, and there is much room for trying different strategic approaches or tweaking a maze in order to achieve a better one.
And of course, there’s the topping: Top 100 scores for the Medium and Hard difficulty levels, special Challenges (such as the 3K fixed maze, or the 100 level Challenge), along with their respective scoreboards, Group Scoreboards (if you want to compete against a particular group of friends) and various other fun modes, give the game a versatility that will keep you playing even when you’ve stopped having fun.
